8 Elastic Webbing
A general name for many varieties of strong and narrow cotton, flax, and silk or other fibre fabrics, made with rubber threads as part of the warp; used for suspenders, garters, belts, etc. -
9 Salopa Fibre
The native trade term for a very stiff, tough and elastic fibre from the stems of the coconut and palmyra palm trees in India and Burma. Used locally for coarse ropes. In 1887 an English firm attempted to use the fibre as a substitute for whalebone in corsets. -
10 Munj Fibre
Strong, elastic fibre obtained from a species of sugar cane in India. Used for ropes, mats and baskets. It resists the action of water. -
11 Coir Fibre
The cocoanut when taken from the tree has a thick fibrous covering, varying from 3-in. to 6 in. in thickness. The kernel is extracted, and the husk is retted to obtain the fibres. The retting is done by keeping the husks under water for several months. This retting dissolves the gum which binds the fibres together and leaves the fibres soft and pliable. In the Anjengo district the retting is done in brackish water which gives a better fibre than when done in fresh water. For this reason Anjengo yarn is claimed as of better quality. The yarns spun from the coir fibre are generally hand produced. The fibre is a reddish brown colour, up to 10 in long, and occurs in the form of large stiff and very elastic filaments, each filament being round smooth and somewhat like horse hair It possesses remarkable tenacity and curls easily. The fibre is used in the South Seas instead of oakum for caulking boats and vessels and it is claimed that it will never rot. Coir fibre is principally used for making mats, cordage, rugs and carpets. About 1 lb of fibre is obtained from six cocoanuts (see Coir Yarn and Kogalla Yarn) -
12 Henequen Fibre
A species of sisal. It is very elastic, strong, white leaf fibre, obtained from the agave plant in Yucatan and Mexico. Used for cordage (see Istle Fibre) and Agave Saxi. -

15 Kanafp Fibre

16 Tinnevelly Cotton

18 Bowstmng Hemp
Elastic, very strong, silky and durable leaf fibre, obtained from several species of the Sanseveiria in Asia, Africa, and America; used for ropes, strings, etc. The fibre somewhat resembles manila hemp. The Sanseveiria roxburghiana, grown in India, where it is known as Moorva, gives the true bowstring hemp, as the fibre is highly prized by the natives for bowstrings on account of its great strength and elasticity. -
19 Terylene
Synthetic textile fibre produced from a polyester derived essentially from terepthalic acid and ethylene glycol, it is the result of research work initiated by Calico Printers' Association, and carried out in their laboratories by Mr. J. R. Whinfield, assisted by Dr. J. T. Dickson and others. The qualities of polyester, and its potential value for fibre making, were recognised by the C.P.A., and patents covering the inventions were taken out by them. The subsequent research work on the chemical polymer and its conversion into a textile fibre was entrusted to Imperial Chemical Industries, who acquired an exclusive licence covering the whole world outside the U.S.A. From a given sample of the parent polymer it is possible to produce multi-filament yams of widely different characteristics by varying the physical and mechanical operations of the spinning and processing. Thus, for example, it is possible to obtain from the same polymer a yarn of low extensibility, but with outstandingly high strength (8 grams per denier or higher), or one of increased extensibility, but with lower strength. Notable property of " Terylene " is high resistance to light and heat and high initial elastic modulus. -
